Unfortunately everything costs money, but it may not be as expensive as you think!
Fees are paid to the club twice a year. This is a relatively new innovation brought in to spread the cost throughout the year, rather than all at once.
In June the annual fees for the Club are due. Currently, this is £40 for senior members and £5 for juniors. This is to pay for the flying-field itself and have the grass cut. The latter is extremely important as the small wheels on our 'planes do not like long grass.
Club fees also go towards improvements to the flying field and special event weekends. We also provide a trainer aircraft with a buddy box for novices.
Access to the field is through a locked gate (to keep any unwanted "guests" out!). For a small refundable deposit you will receive your own key, allowing access whenever you like during the year.
Annual fees for the BMFA, currently £29.00 for 'Seniors', £15.00 for 'Juniors', £19.00 for 'Family' (Spouse/Partner) & £11.00 for 'Family Junior', are due on 31st December. For your money you get up to £5,000,000 of insurance, which is an essential if you want to fly. You also get the backup from them if things do go wrong so it is money very well spent.
What about running costs? A good day's flying on one of the more expensive fuels will cost you around £6:00, depending on the number of flights. So, unless you crash, running costs are relatively low. Your only other costs are getting to the field and charging the batteries.
So it is not an expensive hobby in comparison to many others. It is also very skilful. The experts make it look easy but it takes some practice, as do many things in life. The rewards are great. The first time you fly solo is a great feeling and once those certificates start to come it is extremely rewarding.
