Insurance and Safety
All activities in life came with a risk attached.  Model flying is no exception!  The Club is dedicated to training all its members to the highest standards, adhering to the rules laid down by the club and the BMFA.

The BMFA (British Model Flying Association) is the National body overseeing the hobby.  All members have to subscribe to the BMFA through the club.  For this you get:-

The BMFA News every two months.
Insurance cover of up to £5,000,000.
The backing of a professional national organisation

So it offers really good value for money.

The club has a Safety Officer.  (Even a 2 Kg (4 lb) aeroplane can do some damage if it hits you!)  Fortunately accidents are few and far between but you must treat the 'planes with respect.

From the very start the safety aspect will be brought to your attention.  Your 'plane will be examined for any faults that could be hazardous.  This is not being awkward or vindictive but is a necessary procedure to ensure your safety, the public's safety and the safety of your 'plane.  A loose control surface could, at the worst, cause a bad accident, and, at the least, cause the loss of your cherished plane.

The correct procedure for starting is extremely important.  It is very easy to catch your finger or clothing in a propeller rotating at 12,000 rpm.  You will be taught all these procedures in a very friendly manner.  They will soon become second nature.

When flying there are no-go areas which have to be observed.  The BMFA book shows examples of good practice and the members will help any trainee in observing these.

So the hobby has its hazards but with the correct training these are minimised, leaving us to enjoy ourselves.
